Let’s be clear: no one’s coming out and saying Toyota’s engineers are hard at work on a new MR-2 just yet. But the Web seems to feel the company is going to miss out on a huge opportunity if we don’t see some kind of light-weight, hybrid two-seater from Toyoda’s house sometime soon. Why? For the answer we need only look to Honda’s upcoming CR-Z and the buzz surrounding that electric coupe.
It goes without saying where Honda treads, so doth Toyota, and rumors centering on a sporty coupe with a Prius drivetrain have been building for months. According to Carscoop, that could culminate in the MR-S – a rear-wheel drive hybrid that harkens to the mid-engine terrors of the early-to-mid ‘90s. A lot of the speculation is based on Toyota’s FT-86 Concept – a car developed jointly with Subaru. Personally, we don’t see Toyota striking out with a wild RWD, electron-powered coupe, but a front-wheel drive version wouldn’t seem out of the question to us.
