Default Video! Westfield Sportscars iRacer EV

When it comes to building a proper race car, few platforms offer a better starting point than a Lotus Seven replica. Evidently, that immutable law of motorsports translates to EV racing, as a group of guys under the Westfield Sportscars banner has created a new EV designed to go head to head with other electron-swilling racers in the EV Cup. Powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 107 horsepower and weighing in at just 1,300 lbs, the car can zip to 60 mph in under 5 seconds.

The team specifically designed the car so it could store nearly all of its batteries below the body to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Even so, range is limited to 55 miles under race conditions. Don?t expect to see this thing taking on any endurance competitions any time soon, though its top speed of 110 mph means the iRacer EV will have the chops it needs to keep pace with the rest of the EV Cup field.

What?s all this about the EV Cup? The racing series bills itself as the future of motorsport, and boasts three classes ? two for production EVs and one for prototypes. So far five companies have joined the grid, and the first race kicks off on January 14 in Birmingham, UK. Judging by the testing video below, our guess is the iRacer EV will do quite well.
