I was checking out some things over on the Department of Energy Website, where they have a fascinating section on Emerging Fuels, and I came across a fuel called HDRD, or Hydrogenation-Derived Renewable Diesel. The fuel is manufactured in a standard oil refinery out of either fat, vegetable oil, or some combination of the two with petroleum, and winds up producing an a power output equivalent to regular diesel.
The fuel is currently being produced by a number of companies around the world, including UOP-Eni and Syntroleum here in the US. We've all known about diesel cars being converted to run off of the waste cooking oil from restaurants for some time, but this looks like a giant step to making the process more official. Question is, which fuel will win out in the future?
