prius vs hummer?

Quick Question: Which is more friendly to the environment? -A Prius or a Hummer? If you answered Hummer, you are WRONG. Yes there’s been a million web stories about how terrible mining for nickel is to the environment, which is what is used in the Prius’ batteries. First of all, most of the destructive practices were abolished decades ago, including in Ontario where the headline “Toyota Factory Turns Landscape to Arid Wilderness” is referring. That story originated in a right-leaning English tabloid. Secondly, nickel is mined for a lot more than Prius batteries; including stainless steel, engine alloys and chrome, which are all used in the Hummer. The debate goes on and many suggest that in the lifetime of the vehicle, the Prius is more destructive. What seems destructive to me is the misinformation, which if responsible for making just one eco-minded individual choose to purchase a Hummer is a crying shame.

We are amidst a major crisis, whether people like to admit it or not, and there will be major changes in the auto industry to come. The decisions we make now will influence technological developments and legislation for the future. One simple choice we can all make is to drive our vehicles more earth-friendly now. Like a fat person trying to go on a diet, we must accept making sacrifices in order to achieve our goals. If you’re trying to lose weight, stop looking for delicious-and-filling packaged health foods. Losing weight means not eating until you’re full, and accepting some hunger and muscle pains from workouts. If we’re really serious about going green then why do we drive like we’re racing to the next stop light? We can improve our driving habits now and make them 15% more efficient just by using our current vehicles more efficiently.
